How To Record Vocals In Garageband Ipad

i cannot get garage band to record any vocals.
in the sound panel in system preferences, internal microphone/built-in microphone is highlighted. in the gb preferences, audio input is set to built-in mic, as well. and the input slider (which i assume is the one on the right hand bottom side of the screen under 'recording level' is also all the way over to the max.
when i try to record vocals, nothing happens at all: no up and down lines at all and playback has nothing on it.
any help would be appreciated.
